Little Falls, N.Y. -
Carbon monoxide can not be seen or smelled, but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes.
Produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal is burned, hundreds of people die accidentally every year from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Fetuses, infants, the elderly and people with anemia or with a history of heart or respiratory disease can be especially susceptible, which is why the Little Falls Fire Department and Jerry Keppel of Keppel’s Chimney Lining & Repairs are teaming together in an effort to make the public more aware of the need to practice the do’s and don’ts of carbon monoxide during Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week.
“We want people to know the symptoms of CO poisoning,” said Little Falls Fire Chief Rob Parese. “At moderate levels, you or your family can get severe headaches, become dizzy, mentally confused, nauseated or faint. A person can even die if these levels persist for a long time. Low levels of CO can cause shortness of breath, mild nausea and mild headaches, and may have longer term effects on a person’s health. Since many of these symptoms are similar to those of the flu, food poisoning or other illnesses, a person may not think that CO poisoning could be the cause.”
